Sisters of Charity of New York to join national 'Sisters Speak Out' day of action from Mount Saint Vincent

BRONX, N.Y. — On Tuesday, June 24 at 3:00 p.m., the Sisters of Charity of New York will join with congregations across the country for Sisters Speak Out, a coordinated day of action to protest immoral budget decisions and policies that harm the most vulnerable among us. The event will take place at Mount Saint Vincent Convent, with a livestream available for broader participation.

Sisters and Ministry Representatives will speak out on the pressing issues impacting our communities: immigration and economic justice, homelessness and housing, healthcare, food insecurity, and the moral urgency to protect human dignity in every policy and budget decision.

Sr. Donna Dodge, SC, President of the Sisters of Charity of New York, stated:

“All that has happened in this country over the past several months—especially executive orders that harm migrants, the undocumented, marginalized communities, and those struggling with their identities—compel us to take a stand. As Sisters of Charity, silence is not an option.”

Sr. Carol De Angelo, SC, Director of the Office of Peace, Justice, and Integrity of Creation, added:

“The Office of PJIC is alarmed by the dismantling of environmental safeguards and the long-term harm it poses to our common home.”

Sr. Kathleen Byrnes, SC, reflecting on the momentum behind the movement following her recent participation at ‘Hands-Off’ and ‘No Kings’ protests, shared:

“This is the beginning of a movement, and we need to continue!” (Read more in Global Sisters Report.)

Participants will include: Sr. Donna Dodge; SC, Sr. Carol De Angelo, SC; Sr. Kathleen Byrnes, SC; Sr. Karen Helfenstein, SC; Sr. Margaret O’Brien, SC; Sr. Virginia Searing, SC; James Butler, team member from the Life Experience and Faith Sharing Associates (LEFSA); Barbara Burke, Housing Attorney; and Diandra Garcia-Heredia, Advocacy & Program Coordinator for PJIC. 

The event will open with a welcome from the Sisters of Charity Leadership Team and an opening prayer. Speakers will share stories and examples of how proposed federal budget cuts are already affecting vulnerable communities—and will continue to do so unless people of conscience raise their voices. A closing Call to Action will encourage participants to contact elected officials and join upcoming advocacy efforts.
