Martyrs for women’s rights in Iran: 40 years remembrance campaign

On a single night forty years ago in June, the Islamic Republic of Iran hanged 10 Baha’i women in a square in the city of Shiraz. Their crime was refusing to renounce their beliefs in a faith that promotes the principles of unity, justice, truthfulness and the equality of women and men.

The heroism of these 10 women resonates strongly with anyone who is witness to the current struggle for women’s rights in Iran.

In remembrance of these brave women, the Baha’i International Community has launched a year-long campaign,  #OurStoryIsOne The campaign celebrates the resilience of Iranian women of all faiths and backgrounds and is a call for creative content to be shared on social media.

In addition, the Baha’i House of Worship in Wilmette, Illinois, will host a program on Friday, June 9, at 7:00 p.m. honoring the 10 Baha’i women who gave their lives in 1983.

Ruhi Jahanpour, one of the women who survived the Iranian government arrest 40 years ago, will be a featured guest at the program. Jahanpour now resides in Alabama. She is available for interviews.

The event at the Baha’i House of Worship will also provide an opportunity to welcome Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky, who was the lead sponsor of House Resolution 744 condemning the ongoing persecution of the Baha’is of Iran. The resolution passed on December 1, 2022.
